Current Courses (2025 ~ 

 

Gender and Society: Perspectives from the English-Speaking World and Beyond 

This multidisciplinary course draws on insights from (visual) anthropology, sociology, history, cultural studies, and gender studies to provide students with a nuanced understanding of gender dynamics. Through academic readings, documentaries, interactive discussions, case studies, and guest lectures from experts and activists, students critically examine contemporary debates on gender, culture, and social change. They  also develop analytical tools to engage with these issues in academic and real-world contexts.

 

Academic Writing 

Academic writing is a foundational skill essential for success in higher education and professional research. This course equips students with the tools necessary to communicate ideas effectively, develop strong arguments, and produce well-structured, research-based papers. Through interactive lectures, peer reviews, and hands-on writing exercises, students explore the principles of writing, logical argumentation, citation practices, and research integration. The course also emphasizes clarity, coherence, and editing techniques to refine students' writing style.

 

Narratives of Global Migration Through Visual Media 

This course explores how global migration is represented, constructed, and understood through visual media. Using films, documentaries, photography, and digital storytelling, students analyze the ways in which visual narratives shape public perceptions, migrant identities, and socio-political discourses on mobility. The course draws from visual anthropology, media studies, and migration research to critically examine how visual media can both reflect and challenge dominant migration narratives. As a final project, students create short videos based on interviews with migrants allowing them to practice ethical storytelling, engaging directlu with personal narratives, and better understand how migration is shaped by memory, identity, place, and power.

Cultures of English Speaking World 

This course is designed to introduce students to academic approaches to the cultures and societies of the English-speaking world. Students explore the diversity within English-speaking cultures, understand how historical and contemporary events have shaped societies, and develop critical thinking and analytical skills. The course serves as a foundation for more specialized studies in later years.

 

English Skills 

This course develops advanced English proficiency while equipping students with the analytical and communicative competencies required for academic and professional contexts. Through integrated practice in listening, reading, speaking, and writing, students engage with contemporary texts, social issues, and research-based materials. Emphasis is placed on critical analysis, informed discussion, structured argumentation, and effective presentations, supporting students’ success across disciplines.

English Language Course (2017-2018, Japan College of Social Work) 

This course was designed specifically for students in the Faculty of Social Welfare to enhance their English language skills in a context relevant to their future careers in social work. The course aim was to develop comprehensive English communication abilities through a curriculum that emphasized both written and verbal skills needed in international social welfare settings.
